Machinists are specialists for high-precision work. When drill holes, recesses or hollows have to be located exactly in a specified position, when parts weighing several tons have to be measured to an accuracy of a hundredth of a millimetre, their skills are in demand. They select the appropriate tools – such as turning tools, milling cutters and drills – as well as testing equipment. They often work with computer-controlled machines, which they program and adjust precisely to individual customer requirements.
